House of Bryan meets Decked Out

So Bryan Baeumler sends Paul a text with this great idea for the Decked Out crew to head up north and help him and his crew out on a decking project. Sound like fun?

Well, you're right, it was. Right up to the part where Bryan took all of our lives into his hands during an invigorating speed boat ride, dodging cliffs and boulders in Georgian Bay's 30,000 islands. Bryan grew up there, so presumably he knew where all the secret, deep (albeit narrow) passageways were. Personally, I think he secretly enjoyed watching us squirm as he drove full-tilt toward looming rock walls and dodged them at the last minute. We nearly lost Kate . . . or was it Dave? . . . off the front of the boat when we headed out into the "open water" (as many of you can attest to if you've ever driven a speed boat on windy Georgian Bay!)

Delicious fish and chips at Henry's on the water, drinks by the biggest bonfire known to man, gorgeous lunch at Craganmor Point Resort on McLaren Island, topped off by a 70-foot cliff jump. Bryan and Sarah were great hosts and we truly had a blast!

We may or may not have endured some recent mockery for the, achem, lack of deck at our place. This has, in fact, been a running family joke for quite some time. Several years ago, we actually managed to design and build a fancy little deck for ourselves . . . just before selling the house.

Alas, it seems we have joined the highly esteemed ranks of all those shoemakers out there, walking around with holes in their shoes.

Today, the little people (also known as "our daughters") built their own deck in the back yard. I'm not sure what's going on there, but I think there was some old plywood and lawn chairs involved.

May the mockery continue . . .

Hello, Spring, Nice to Meet You!

Okay, so I'm sitting at my desk working furiously as usual, to the sound of the rain pitter-pattering against the windows and the cool breeze moving through the partially opened windows. They should be closed, of course, but we are defying the winter. And yes, it is mid-May.

I remember that I should probably have changed my clothes after our morning shoot with the Kia Drive-Change folks, which was accentuated, of course, by the sheets of rain splattering against our faces and the ten zillion annoying little sandflies that were nesting in our hair. But I digress.

Just a moment ago, I noticed a strange yellowish-white phenomenon stretching out across my floor and I realized the spring may just have won its battle with the long winter. I certainly hope so. I don't think the crew is enjoying this one bit. It's certainly making site banter a lot more challenging!

Watch us on Thursday night for two more great back-to-back episodes ~ and remember, if you're interested in having us design your very own back yard outdoor living space, give us a call!

Off to open up that window a little more . . .

Decked Out Launch!

We did it! "Decked Out" aired for the first time last Thursday and the feedback has been unbelievable. If you missed it, just log on to the HGTV website and you can watch full episodes there. If you're in the U.S., don't worry! We're hoping the show will be airing on your side of the boarder by the end of the month.

Paul and the team have lots of laughs, while blowing our minds (as usual) with the incredible designs, building talent, and finished products featured on the show.

We are now designing for clients all across North America, and using a new state-of-the-art 3D Design software called "DeckWorks" (http://www.designworksco.com), which enables us to generate three dimensional photo-realistic images of each project.

Decked Out Challenge

Think you can build an amazing deck? Want to prove it on national television? A new show for HGTV Canada is looking for weekend warriors with skills and a sense of humour to face-off in a deck building competition.

Two teams of two will be given two days to build a deck of their own design inside a warehouse-turned-television-studio location. It's you and a buddy versus your competitor and their buddy. BYOS. Bring your own skill – we’ll provide the tools, materials, a little extra help...you provide everything else.

At the end of the two-day build, a team of judges will examine the decks and declare a winner. The winner will get something...we just haven't figured that out yet.

Each candidate will need to provide a short video of themselves and their building-buddy. Nothing fancy. If you have a camera or even a decent phone with video that’s great. The video needs to show candidates with their friend saying why they should be the competitors for Decked Out Challenge, why you are a great team, why you think you will win and what building experience you have. Have fun -- show your personality.

Videos should be three minutes max. We are looking for friends that work well together and are entertaining.

The videos can be either emailed or burned on a DVD and mailed in (address below).

The candidates will need to be available for two consecutive building days during the competition and two days at a later time for post-competition interviews. Main filming will take place from March 13 – April 2, 2011 in Toronto.

It is becoming more and more popular for events, like weddings, to be done outside. In Ontario, there are many outdoor venues to choose from. Your own backyard being one of them!

It's Aired ....

The episode that we blogged about back in January, has finally aired. We were asked by Holmes Inspection to help them rebuild a back, 2-story porch that had been enclosed. Paul and the guys worked really hard in minus 10 weather to create a beautiful work of art.

The episode is called, "Back to the Drawing Board". If you missed the night it aired, check it out on the HGTV Canada website.

Paul covers some basics about building with Pressure Treated (PT) wood. What PT is best for and why it is not necessarily the best choice any more for deck floors. There are many options now available to homeowners. Cutting Edge can help you make the correct choice for you!

"Many people love the ambiance and warmth provided by a gas fireplace in the basement. A large, flickering flame is a real eye catcher ... but be very careful as these high, hypnotic flames can prove to be a distraction when choosing the right fireplace for your space.

The BTU output of the unit, must be taken into account in correlation with the size of your room. Otherwise, you will be enjoying the high flames for mere moments before you are forced to strip down or turn your fireplace off!

Don't worry, you can still enjoy the beautiful glow of a fire ... just choose the appropriate unit for your space."

Do not let the idea of a big flame turn into the embarrassment of a big awkard moment ... friends all around trying to enjoy your newly renovated basement, but all sweating and wishing they were upstairs.

"Focal points are key to designing any room, particularly when you are starting from scratch! A wonderful focal point is the fireplace. Unfortunately, the fireplace usually loses out to a more dominant focal point ... the big screen television!

If both items are in the plan, then be very careful not to have competing focal points in the same room. This only works when both are in the same eye-line. Here at Cutting Edge, we will often mount the TV above the fireplace, taking the necessary heat precautions, to ensure that both focal points are aligned."

During the winter months, it is true that usually deck companies close up shop and return back to work in the spring. This has not been the case for Cutting Edge Construction and Design. We have been able to stay open due to you, our great Customers!

Cutting Edge has always been an interior reno company, but we are known more for our wonderful deck designs. In the past year, our basement designs are finally gettting the same attention! Cutting Edge crews have been building from this past fall and will continue right through until Spring. We have been featured now for a year, on the Homes Media website, found under basement contractors. This has been a wonderful tool for people to find us .... and find us you have!

"There is something about the cozy feel of being under a pergola or trellis, even if it is not built to provide shade. Consider using overhead structurs in your design."

Since, we at Cutting Edge know that you are taking advantage of these winter months to plan for your beautiful summer retreat outside, we thought it would be great to talk about height.

Like in all designing, you should remember that the lines of your deck design can be either pleasing or not pleasing, to your eye. Adding 'different planes' to your design will do wonders for your overall effect.

We can reminisce through this past year with fondness and cheer. One of the journeys that Cutting Edge was proud to be a part of was another Home Depot/ Breakfast Television 48 hour Backyard Makeover. Our 3rd this far!

It is great to be involved in making a family's life a little easier. Working with the Home Depot and other companies to create a wonderful new living space was fantastic! Even though the time frame is a challenge and the weather did not co-oporate - it is always a fabulous time.

Here Comes 2010!

So it is official! 2010 is going to hold a whole new journey for Cutting Edge Construction and Design. "The Outsiders" will be begin production in the spring of the New Year!

It was a wonderful present. In amongst all the business of the holidays, getting the call saying HGTV had no challenges and they believe our show will be a hit!

It has been a busy summer this year! We have completed many more projects and taken on some new adventures. One of those being, filming with The Holmes Media Group once again.

We were called in to create a floating deck on top of a renovated back porch. Most people, when they hear 'floating deck' they think - water damage. But by securing the deck into the actual framing of the house and not to the roof, we eliminate any leaking that can occur.

Welcome to the first Cutting Edge blog entry! I am Paul Lafrance, designer and co-owner of Cutting Edge Construction and Design. It has been quite the 12 year growth for this once quaint little decking company.

Growth to the point that, over the past few years, Cutting Edge has begun to be recognized for our creative design and building excellence. 2008, however has seen some significant recognition! Our decks have been featured on quite a few television shows over the years such as “Breakfast Television” and “Green Force”, so to be seen on TV is not a new experience.

That being said, getting the call from Mike Holmes from HGTV’s “Holmes on Homes” was a different kettle of fish entirely. Mike has been labeled “Canada’s Most Trusted Contractor” and has helped many people over the years who have had devastating experiences at the hands of bad contractors. His show is the most popular show on HGTV and he has travelled internationally showing people how to “Make It Right” in locations such as Los Angeles, New Orleans, and even Africa.

Cutting Edge was first called in to take part in his biggest show ever called “Lien On Me”. The project involved tearing a house right down to the foundation and rebuilding it from scratch. We built the decks on the front and the rear of the house and got to know Mike along the way.

That led to being asked to take part in a Holmes on Homes episode in May called “Rock Bottom”. An episode where another Canadian Icon, Don Cherry, also made an appearance. Cutting Edge built a custom railing system that was very unique! Although it got rave reviews, it still did not really allow us to show what type of decking we are capable of doing.

Well, we then got our chance. Mike asked if I would design and build a deck at his personal home. To say I was honored would be an understatement! I was able to design to my hearts content, and the result was fabulous. See slideshow below.

In my next entry I will talk about the project and the process of working with Mike in his home setting. Till then………keep breathing the outdoor air.
